The Innovation of Artificial Intelligence in Mechanical Manufacturing and Automation

Artificial intelligence technology, as an emerging technology in the information age, has a wide range of applications in the current field of mechanical design and manufacturing, and promotes the intelligent and automated development of mechanical design and manufacturing. Artificial intelligence is changing the world... but how can the security of AI be ensured?

Artificial intelligence, as a branch of computer science, is based on computer science and combines various disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, linguistics, etc. to simulate and learn certain human processes and intelligent behaviors, providing important intelligent technological means for the current social development. In order to further enhance the effectveness of the application of artificial intelligence technology in mechanical design and manufacturing, improve the market competitiveness of enterprises, in-depth research and analysis should be conducted on the application of artificial intelligence technology, and thereby drive further development of enterprises and even industries. But in order to combine artificial intelligence technology with mechanical safety technology, a challenge that must be faced is the "black box" nature of AI. We cannot predict or understand how complex AI systems make decisions, which is precisely the key to functional safety.

Application requirements of AI in mechanical safety

The application requirements of artificial intelligence technology in mechanical safety mainly involve three key aspects, namely safety, transparency, and reliability. When implementing AI mechanical safety, it must be fully considered and implemented.

Security refers to the ability of an AI system to perform its functions without causing harm to personnel, property, or the environment. For manufacturing enterprises, safety production is an important guarantee for their development. In the field of mechanical safety, it means that AI systems must be able to function properly and take appropriate safety measures in the event of abnormalities or malfunctions, therefore the design and implementation of AI systems must follow strict safety standards.

Transparency refers to the ability of an AI system's decision-making process to be understood and explained, which helps establish user trust in the AI system and quickly locate and solve problems when they arise. In the field of mechanical safety, this means that operators and safety engineers need to be able to understand how AI systems make specific decisions in order to intervene or improve when necessary.

Reliability refers to the ability of an AI system to consistently and stably perform its predetermined tasks over a long period of time. In the field of mechanical safety, the reliability of AI systems is crucial as it directly affects the safety performance of the system. In order to improve the reliability of AI systems, technicians will use various algorithms and methods to quantify the uncertainty of the system. In addition, the reliability of AI systems can be improved by adopting appropriate system architecture and design concepts.

Follow up on legislation and standards

The EU AI Act provides unified rules for the development, deployment, and use of AI systems, while also focusing on personal safety and basic rights. Currently, widely used algorithms fall within the scope of this Act, but it is still in the drafting stage.

The EU Machinery Directive already requires compliance assessment when using AI systems in functional safety, so safety related AI systems are classified as' high-risk machinery.
