What is risk assessment?

Risk assessment is a documented process of conducting physical inspections and reviews of the entire workflow or individual devices in accordance with national or international standards.

Why is risk assessment necessary?

In Europe: Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC

The manufacturer or authorized representative of the machinery needs to ensure that a risk assessment has been conducted to determine the health and safety requirements for the use of the machinery. The design and manufacture of the machinery must take into account the results of the risk assessment. Therefore, if the equipment needs to be exported to Europe, risk assessment is an essential step.

In the United States, the Occupational Health and Safety Act 1970 Public Law 91-596 states:

Employers need to provide employees with a suitable working environment where the recognized hazards will not or are unlikely to cause death or serious bodily injury. Risk assessment is the best practice for companies to meet OSHA requirements.

In China, GB/T 15706-2012 "General Principles for Safety Design of Machinery - Basic Information - Risk Assessment and Risk Reduction" states:

To provide designers with an overall framework and decision-making guidance, enabling them to design machines that are safe within their intended range of use during the mechanical development phase. Therefore, in the development and design of machinery in China, risk assessment also needs to be considered.
